How can I improve poor print quality?

There a several methods that can improve poor print quality:

Adjust the Automatic Forms Thickness Adjustment (AFTA) Setting: If your print is too light, or you have unreadable or irregular characters (missing dots) the Automatic Forms Thickness Adjustment (AFTA) Setting for the paper source you are using may need to be changed, as the printhead needs to be brought closer to the print media. If the ribbon is smudging or in some cases snagging you may need to adjust the Automatic Forms Thickness Adjustment (AFTA) Setting so that the printhead is further away from the forms. If the forms will need feed past the printhead it is possible that you may need adjust the Automatic Forms Thickness Adjustment (AFTA) Setting so that the printhead is further away from the forms. There are instructions on this FAQ page on how to adjust the Automatic Forms Thickness Adjustment (AFTA) Setting.

Adjust the Impact Setting: If you have the latest version of firmware on your Compuprint 4247 then you can adjust the striking force of the printhead pins by changing the Impact Setting. if you're experiencing a light print or irregular characters (missing dots) on the multiform copies you should change your Impact Setting from "Normal" (default), to either "Strong" or "Heavy Duty". There are instructions on this FAQ page on how to adjust the Impact Setting.

Change the Print Quality Setting: By default your printer is set to it's fastest possible print speed at 10 cpi. This means that it is also at it's lowest print quality setting. The slower the print speed the more pins (dots) are used to make the characters, resulting in a  darker print caused by a more dense striking of the pins. There are instructions on this FAQ page on how to change the Print Quality Setting.

Perform a Bidirectional Adjustment: If your characters are unreadable, partial or missing dots, you can adjust dot registration and print quality for characters on your printer by running the bidirectional adjustment test pattern. There are instructions on this FAQ page on how to perform a Bidirectional Adjustment.

Replace the Print Ribbon: Please be sure that the ribbon is installed correctly, without any bends or twists in the ribbon band before replacing. A bent or twisted ribbon band, can cause any of the print issues described below. A dry or worn ribbon can cause a number of print quality issues including unreadable or irregular characters, missing dots, and light prints. If a ribbon is excessively worn it can snag, rip, or be immobile. If a new ribbon starts to cause smudging where there wasn't any before, the ribbon may be over-inked or otherwise defective, and may need to be replaced. There are instructions on this FAQ page on how to replace the Print Ribbon.

Try new higher quality multiple-part forms: Poor quality multiple-part forms can cause unreadable or partial characters.
